Melissa Derome, Cohort 69

When Melissa came to NECAT through our community partner Access to Recovery (ATR), she was looking for a way forward on her recovery journey. Quiet and reserved at first, she quickly embraced every opportunity to learn, asking thoughtful questions in the classroom and kitchen, and working with Career Services to build her resume.

While still in training, Melissa took a part-time job catering with Above & Beyond Catering, one of NECAT’s new employer partners. After graduation, she became one of the first members of NECAT’s new Job Club and dedicated her time to securing full-time employment. Melissa landed her dream job as a cook at the Epiphany School in Dorchester. “I’m glad I came to NECAT. I’ve learned so much, and the staff’s support helped me get out of my comfort zone,” Melissa shared. Her advice for future students, “ask questions and be open to learning. There are so many opportunities.” Melissa’s dream is to one day own her own food truck and serve dishes that bring joy and delight to her customers.
